What are the Odds? The Miracle of Being Alive

Mark RaglandComment

400 Trillion to 1.

400,000,000,000,000 to 1.

Those are the odds of you being alive.

It is a miracle that you’re alive. It’s a miracle that you were born, and then you grew up, and now you’re here.

I don’t want to bang the “have some perspective!” drum, but we need it. In the game of life, we are already winning. Regardless of your background or history, you have unbelievable opportunities and potential. If you’re reading this, you have access to some form of technology, which means you probably don’t live in a country where access to food and clean water is limited. If this is true, you are enormously blessed.

Yes, I know that life is difficult and there are problems, and I will never minimize that. There are struggles now, and there always will be in some capacity. However, that doesn’t take away from the fact that there is so much to be grateful for.

Let’s talk about complaining. I do it, you probably do it, but it’s probably stealing a lot of your joy in life. It’s okay to be critical and look for problems, but having a bad attitude about half the things that come your way is only hurting yourself, and maybe the people around you too. It’s such a blessing that you get to do whatever it is that you do today. Even if it something difficult at least you get to do it and have the opportunity to be alive.

Because life is so special, don’t live your life solely based on what society is doing or what others expect of you. Seriously think about how you want your life to be, what you want to do, where are you want to do it, and then put a plan together to make that happen. Preferably you can pursue a job that you are passionate about and find meaning in, but even if you can’t, there is other time in your days and weeks where you can do what you love, or do something to contribute to the world in a positive day.

Be kind to people, work hard, enjoy life. We have been given the best opportunity EVER. Don’t waste it doing things you don’t want to do or that add no value to your life. Today matters, live it as best you can.

400,000,000,000,000 to 1.

Be grateful, live well, and love deeply.

Mark
